Environment Oregon is a citizen-based environmental advocacy organization that works on behalf of its more than 35,000 members (and counting!). Our core mission is simple: to protect Oregon's clean air, clean water, and open space. In practice, our professional staff combines independent research, practical ideas, and tough-minded advocacy to preserve our state's wild places and natural beauty, protect Oregonians from toxic pollution, reduce our material consumption, build sustainable transportation and communities, and shift to 100% clean energy. Overcoming powerful special interests invested in the status quo is no easy task, so we work tirelessly for our members, the environment, and the future.
Environment Oregon draws on 30 years of success in tackling our state's top environmental problems. Since 1971, the Oregon State Public Interest Group (OSPIRG) has fought the hard battle on behalf of the public interest for democracy, consumers, and the environment. OSPIRG led in establishing the nation's first bottle bill right here in Oregon in 1973. Since then until 2007 OSPIRG fought for clean air and water, renewable energy, energy efficient appliance, toxic-free toys, protection of Oregon's farms and forests, and much more. In 2007, Environment Oregon was created to takeover OSPIRG's expanding environmental agenda and provide focused attention to our world's critical environmental challenges.
