Welcome to Environment Oregon

Environment Oregon is a citizen-based environmental advocacy organization that works on behalf of its more than 35,000 members (and counting!).

Our core mission is simple: to protect Oregon's clean air, clean water, and open space. In practice, our professional staff combines independent research, practical ideas, and tough-minded advocacy to preserve our state's wild places and natural beauty, protect Oregonians from toxic pollution, reduce our material consumption, build livable communities with a backbone of high speed rail, and create a complete clean energy economy.

Overcoming powerful special interests invested in the status quo is no easy task, so we work tirelessly for our members, the environment, and the future.

Creating a greener future.

Clean energy for your home

Clean energy isn’t just about shutting down coal plants and building utility-sized wind farms — it’s also about making your home more energy efficient and installing rooftop solar panels. Environment Oregon helped improve state building codes for new residential and commercial construction and helped pass innovative financing tools that will make it easier for Oregonians to weatherize their homes and install solar panels.

Conserving Marine Habitat

Environment Oregon worked to establish the state's first two marine reserves in 2010 and created a process for designating an additional four sites.  These "parks in the sea" will help protect our most precious marine habitats from dangerous resource extraction activities and overuse.  Our underwater gardens of kelp forests, along with the sea cucumbers, starfish, Stellar sea lions, seals, and 250 migrating gray whales will now have a better chance at survival.

Changing our energy mix

In a short few years, Oregon has become America's capitol of the clean energy economy in every sector from building wind farms to manufacturing solar panels, from manufacturing streetcars to building plug-in car infrastructure, and from installing home energy efficiency to growing the most green jobs.  Environment Oregon helped make this happen by passing the state greenhouse gas goals, renewable portfolio standard, and energy tax incentives.

Preserving the Metolius

Environment Oregon protected the majestic Metolius River from two mega-sized resorts. Increased demand for water would have strained the resources of the small river basin. This treasured state river is now permanently protected, benefiting one of the best bull trout populations and preserving the river for future generations.

Take Action:

Fifty-three percent of Oregon's streams, including the Willamette’s tributaries, are unprotected from polluters because of recent Supreme Court decisions that weaken the Clean Water Act. Sign below to help us restore the protections the Williamette deserves.
