Healthy OceansOregon enjoys a majestic coastline, populated by a diverse collection of birds, fish, whales and other wildlife. We need to protect our coast, and take leadership in making sure the Pacific is healthy. Coastal communities also represent a $5 billion economy — establishing marine reserves will protect the places and activities that drive tourism and related industries and by restoring populations of fish and other animals will provide long-term stability to the fishing industry. Great Pacific CleanupOff the Oregon Coast is an island of trash twice the size of Texas that's 90% plastic and kills millions of birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals and countless fish each year. On April 20, BP's Deepwater Horizon offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and caught fire, causing a major oil spill. Just a month earlier, Environment Oregon worked to pass an extension of our state moratorium on offshore drilling through 2020. Now we're organizing to stop offshore drilling in our national waters.
