Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska introduced a resolution today disapproving of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s December 2009 scientific finding that carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants threaten human health and the environment. She crafted the resolution pursuant to the Congressional Review Act, a law that enables Congress to veto federal agency rules using special, expedited procedures.

Portland General Electrict (PGE) announced on Thursday that intended to shutdown its coal-fired power plant in Boardman, Oregon, by 2020. This announcement was a significant departure from PGE’s integrated resource plan submitted to the Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) last fall that called for the continued operation of the Boardman coal plant at least through the year 2040. PGE’s commitment to stakeholders also reaffirms the analysis and position of Environment Oregon that the power plant can and should be retired as soon as possible.

Portland, OR—President Obama announced today that the Department of Energy will issue $2.3 billion in clean energy manufacturing tax credits from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act– the vast majority of which will be used to spur more energy efficient buildings and wind, solar, and fuel cell power.

Environment Oregon checked our list, we checked it twice. The Portland General Electric’s Boardman coal-fired power plant is naughty, not nice. And Oregon is getting 41% of its electricity from coal this holiday season.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today will finalize its proposed finding that carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants threaten the public health and welfare of current and future generations, setting the stage for regulating the pollutants under the Clean Air Act.

The United States, long considered a laggard in addressing global warming, is poised to achieve large reductions in global warming pollution thanks to clean energy policies adopted over the past decade by state governments, according to a new report by the Environment America Research & Policy Center.

Far from a solution to global warming, nuclear power will actually set America back in the race to reduce pollution, according to a new report by Environment Oregon. We are calling on Congress to follow Oregon’s lead and focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy instead of nuclear power as the solution to global warming.
2009-11-12
Oregon’s global warming pollution increased by 41 percent since 1990, according to a new analysis of government data released today by Environment Oregon.

A new national report by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy finds that Oregon households would save an average of $239 per year and 8,600 sustainable jobs would be created in the state over the next ten years if Congress acts now to include strong energy efficiency improvements in energy and climate legislation.

Between 2010 and 2030, Oregon will spend as much as $305.4 billion on oil, coal, and other fossil fuels - 3.4 the total earnings of all Oregon workers in 2007. At the same time, pollution from fossil fuels is the number one source of air and global warming pollution and a leading source of water pollution, said Environment Oregon in their new report. High spending on fossil fuels is largely driven by our dependence on oil, according to the analysis. Oregon is on track to spend as much as $14.6 billion on oil alone in 2030, 83 percent of the state’s total spending on fossil fuels.
